Alopecia areata or spot baldness is an autoimmune skin disease which leaves circular bald patches on the scalp. All of the factors, causing this condition, are still unknown, but medical specialists believe that they are a combination of some environmental factors (a pathogen or emotional stress) and heredity. Alopecia areata can progress into two severe forms: Alopecia totalis which affects the whole scalp and Alopecia universalis which causes hair loss all over the body.
The Alopecia areata treatment includes hair growth stimulation by steroid injections in the affected areas, but this treatment is not recommended in case of large bald spots. Alternative medications (such as oral steroids and creams) and treatments (like ultraviolet light therapy) might have some undesirable side effects. In most cases of Alopecia areata, hair grows back within a year.
